Though the sport may have been different, the excitement and thrill of Friday night lights was still very present on the soccer field at Benton Central as Delphi took on Faith Christian in the sectional championship. Last year’s double overtime sectional championship loss against Faith was still fresh in the minds of the Oracles. This time, however, neither team was able to break through on the scoreboard during regulation nor the two periods of overtime. The Eagles created multiple opportunities for themselves despite the score, but senior goalkeeper Brayton Slifer recorded seven saves and made his way off the line on several occasions to disrupt the opposing offense. The game came down to a penalty kick shootout to determine the winner. Slifer kept his streak of good play alive as he saved a shot that combined with a Faith miss to give Delphi the 4-3 win on PKs and its first soccer sectional championship.
The Oracles overall record is now 7-9-1. Delphi’s regional semi-final will take place at Peru this Thursday, October 16th at 7:30 pm against Eastern.
