Gasser’s double-double help Lady Oracles find retribution over Carroll Cougars
By Clay Maxfield
Last week Delphi fell to the hands of the Carroll Cougars in the championship game of the Indiana Kitchen Classic. After they had licked their wounds and the loss had set in they regained focus and traveled to county rival Carroll to face off against their rival for the second time in less than a week, leaving with a commanding 45-31 win and a little bit of payback as well.
Delphi’s second game on the road looked to start off as a rough one when the Lady Cougars hit back to back three’s before junior forward, Myka Roth, got the Oracles on the board with an easy basket inside. Carroll countered with 2 consecutive trips to the free throw line, going 4 for 4 and extending their lead 10-2 before Bailey Gasser and Roth helped Delphi claw their way back within 2 at the end of the quarter.
Although the Cougars took control in the first quarter, the second quarter was all Delphi as they held Carroll to just two points the entire period. Meanwhile, 4 different Oracles helped build a lead as they went into halftime with a 20-12 lead.
The lead was spurred by inside work from Tatum Minier and Kayla Fogarsi while Bailey Gasser not only hit a three early in the period but also split a pair of free throws as well. Dani Swayze also contributed from behind the arc, connecting on a 3 ball to close off the 1st half.
Delphi’s Bailey Gasser continued to work in the second half, helping the Oracle’s cushion their lead by scoring the first 5 points in the 3rd, putting Delphi up 25-12 with 6:30 left. Tatum Minier then went on to hit 4 free throws and the Lady Oracle’s went into the 4th quarter with only a 6 point lead as the Carroll Cougars mounted a comeback.
While the defense helped put a stop to the Cougar’s thoughts of repeating another large win over the Oracle’s, Minier and Gasser aided in putting a stop to all concessions as they helped the offense go on a 9-3 run which pushed them to a 39-30 lead with less than 2 minutes to go.
The remainder of the game was spent at the free throw line as Swayze and Minier went a combined 5 for 8 and Delphi avenged an earlier season loss to the Lady Cougars with a 45-31 win on Carroll’s homecourt.
The Lady O’s were led by Bailey Gasser’s double-double (15 points, 10 rebounds) who believed that “after losing to Carroll on Saturday we knew we had a chance for a quick turnaround. We wanted this win badly and it shows by just how well we played defensively, putting pressure on them and making it difficult for them to convert on the offensive end.”
Delphi was also led by 2 other players who scored in double figures, Dani Swayze, 10 and Tatum Minier, 13. Tatum Minier also added 7 rebounds while Dani Swayze looked to share the ball, finishing the game with a team high 4 assists.
