Delphi came into Thursday night riding an 11 game winning streak and looking to do one of many things that night including continue that streak to 12, protect their home court for the 13th straight win as well as win the conference titles in what would be the first time in many years.
The game started out with accolades and recognitions across the board, beginning with the appreciation of the senior class including Makenzie Gear, Khrstyna Yarema and Ava Von der Mehden. Just before the game was to tip off the Lady Oracles took center court in honor of Delphi alum, Karen Hanni who on this past Saturday was inducted into the University of Indianapolis’s 2015 Hall of Fame Class.
Once the confetti had fallen and the teams had tipped off it was clear from the beginning that Delphi wasn’t in for an easy match Thursday night. Benton Central came out in what was the clear size advantage over the Oracles and their full court pressure caused Delphi to turn the ball over numerous times before finally gaining their bearings. Myka Roth got Delphi going by working inside which then in return freed things up for the other big in the middle, Tatum Minier. These two getting hot though wasn’t quite enough as they trailed by 14, 30-16 at the end of the second quarter.
Delphi slowed the pace down in the second half where Roth continued to dominate along with Swayze and Minier. Benton Central kept up their inside dominance but once Delphi began to get a grasp on the paint Bison were able to hit from outside, proving why they were ranked as the number one team in the state.
The Lady Oracles put together a run and won both the third and fourth quarter but ultimately fell short as they lost, 44-35, breaking their 11 game streak and losing to the conference title to undefeated Benton Central Bison.
Delphi was led in scoring by Myka Roth with 11, Tatum Minier, 9 and Dani Swayze with 7. Roth and Bailey Gasser both led the team with 7 rebounds as well.
The Lady Oracles will start their tournament run as the only team in the sectional with a winning record in North Newton against North Judson on February 13th at 5:30 PM.
