This week was a high-scoring rollercoaster for Delphi Athletics, as the Oracles’ baseball and softball teams hit the fields for a packed slate of games. Here are the updates from this week's Diamond Sports. Softball: Oracles Offense Explosive in Dominant Week The Delphi varsity softball team was a run scoring machine this week, showcasing an offense built around senior experience. The Oracles posted a staggering 53 runs over just two games, starting their season with a clear message that they can post crooked numbers in bunches. Monday, April 6: Delphi 30, North White 2 The Oracles opened the week and season with a statement road win. The bats were on fire from the first pitch, leading to a massive 30-run performance. The team combined for a .647 batting average in this contest alone overwhelming the home Vikings early and often. Tuesday, April 7: Delphi 23, Frontier 1 The following day at the home opener, the bats remained white hot. Delphi dismantled Frontier in a five-inning shortened game. Freshman first baseman Ava Mills currently leads the Oracles with 9 hits. Sophomore all-state short stop Sami Leopard and senior catcher Airy Lattimore have proven their defensive skill with perfect fielding percentages and been terrors on the base paths. Sami with 8 and Airy with 7 runs, and each recording 3 stolen bases. Current Record: 2-0 Baseball: Gritty Road Wins and High-Scoring Battles The baseball team had a more turbulent week but proved they have the "clutch" factor, winning a tight road battle to bounce back from an early setback. The Oracles attempted to open their season at home last Friday with a double header against Marquette Catholic. The boys were slow to get their offense going, and had just tied the game 3-3 heading into the top of the 6th as the game was suspended due to thunder storms, and will be made up on May 9th. Monday, April 6: Clinton Central 18, Delphi 13 The conference opponents faced off in an early season non-conference game. In a marathon that saw a combined 31 runs, the Oracles fell just short against the Bulldogs. Despite a massive 8-run 5th inning that brought Delphi back into the game, seven errors proved too costly to overcome. In the end this was a game that was determined by who made the least mistakes. The Bulldogs combined for less walks and errors, and that was ultimately the difference. The two teams will face off again on April 29th in their official conference match-up to determine their seeds in the conference championship tournament. Tuesday, April 7: Delphi 7, Benton Central 1 The Oracles didn't let the Monday loss linger. They bounced back immediately with a dominant performance over a potential Sectional opponent in the Benton Central Bison. Brett Huffman and Cason Milles combined to pitch a gem, allowing only one unearned run, while the offense remained steady securing the team's first win. Thursday, April 9: Delphi 6, Seeger 5 In the most dramatic game of the week, the Oracles took a 3-2 lead into the final 3 innings at Seeger. After the Patriots tied it up, Delphi pushed ahead late behind a 2 RBI pinch hit from freshman Tommy Johns. In the bottom of the 7th, the Oracles allowed a base runner with one out and only a one run lead, but Levi Coghill was able to close the door with two more quick outs to secure a 6-5 victory. Current Record: 2-1 Next match-ups: Softball: The Oracles host a triangular on Saturday, April 11, against Faith Christian and Lafayette Jeff. Delphi will face the Bronchos at 10:00a, Jeff and Faith will play at 11:30a, and the Oracles and Eagles will play at 1:00p. Jeff is currently 1-2 with losses to Carroll and McCutcheon. Last year in the same triangular the Bronchos came out on top with back to back wins defeating the Oracles in a dramatic finish 7-6. Faith is currently 0-2 with losses to Western Boone and Pioneer. They left the triangular 0-2 last year with a 5 run 14-4 loss to the girls. Baseball: The boys return home on Saturday, April 11, for an 11:00 AM match-up against Madison-Grant. The Argylls (2-1) are strong contenders in 2A with a very talented lineup. Last year in the same format the Oracles lost both games by a combined 25 runs, and currently Madison Grant is favored in this season's match-up. However, the boys look to continue their recent clutch momentum against this early test.
