LAFAYETTE, IN — In a stunning display of talent, strategy, and selfless teamwork, freshman distance specialist Leo Hernandez etched his name into the Delphi history books at the IHSAA Boys Track Regional at Lafayette Jefferson High School. Hernandez finished 10th overall in a highly competitive field, crossing the finish line with a blistering time of 9:52.04 to secure the school’s 3200-meter record. The achievement marks a rapid changing of the guard for the program's distance records. The original 3200M benchmark was set in 1980 by Brian Forgarsi and stood for over four decades before it was finally bested last year by Johnny Martinez. Just one year later, Hernandez has lowered the bar once again. What makes Hernandez’s historic run even more remarkable is the strategic pivot that occurred one week earlier in the postseason. Originally, the team’s plan heading into Sectionals was for upperclassman Harrison Bernfield to make the primary attempt at advancing in the 3200M, while Hernandez was slated to focus his energy on the 1600M. However, mid-race dynamics changed everything. Recognizing that Hernandez was running at a historic pace, Martinez—the reigning record holder—urged the freshman to throw out the original script, step up, and chase the record rather than pacing back. Hernandez capitalized on the moment, qualifying for the Regional showcase in a thrilling fashion only seconds short of the all-time Oracle mark. This was his second top 3 finish of the night qualifying him to run the open 1600M and 3200M races. The milestone highlights a culture of profound sportsmanship within the program. Following the Sectional pivot, Martinez (returning from college) and Bernfield dedicated themselves to Hernandez's Regional preparation, serving as training partners and pacing him through workouts. In an effort to pour everything into the record breaking push, Leo decided to scratch from the 1600M and concentrate on putting his best performance into the 3200M. Upon Hernandez crossing the finish line at Lafayette Jeff, both teammates were the first to celebrate the freshman eclipsing the school mark. "This is the ultimate definition of a team effort," said Athletic Director Chip Dale, "To see selfless teammates and current record holders working together to help a freshman succeed embodies what community based high school athletics are all about. We are incredibly proud of Leo, and equally proud of Johnny and Harrison for their exceptional leadership and sportsmanship." Hernandez concludes an outstanding freshman campaign, establishing himself as one of the premier young distance runners in the region.
