Leo Hernandez joins exclusive fraternity

By Chip Dale | Nov 2, 2026 8:56 AM

Leo Hernandez capped off a stellar sophomore campaign on Halloween at the IHSAA State Finals. After a freshman cross-country and track and field season that saw him qualify for Regionals in both sports, and a record setting 2 mile performance in the spring the 2nd year runner continued to show why he is one to watch in the future finishing 110th out of 250 at the highest level of Indiana Cross Country competition. His season accolades this year included: Victories at the West Central 421 Run, Oracle Invitational, and Hoosier Heartland Conference Championship. Other notable performances included a 3rd place at the Twin Lakes Invitational, and 4th place at the prestigious New Prairie "The Invite". His tournament run started at the Tippecanoe Amphitheater where he placed 4th in a very difficult Harrison hosted Sectional. That qualified him for the Regional at Brownsburg where several of the state's top teams combine from Lafayette and the northern side of Indianapolis. There he produced a sub 16:00 5k earning the ticket to the state finals with a 34th overall individual placement breaking a 65 year drought and becoming only the third runner ever to appear from Delphi at the Cross Country state finals. Prior qualifiers were Wayne Hathaway ('54 and '55) and Jim Wilson ('61). With Leo's 110th, Wayne maintained the highest placement for an Oracle in 1954 with a 7th place race.
