Historic Milestone: First IHSAA Sanctioned Girls Wrestling Tournament in Delphi, IN Delphi, IN – November 9, 2024, marked a historic day for girls wrestling in Indiana as the first ever Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) sanctioned girls wrestling tournament weekend commenced in Delphi. This groundbreaking event brought together 97 female athletes from 15 schools, competing fiercely and demonstrating the incredible growth and popularity of girls wrestling in the state. The participating schools included Benton Central, Delphi, Valparaiso, Twin Lakes, South Newton, Harrison, McCutcheon, Peru, Pioneer, Rossville, West Central, Tri-County, Rensselaer, Lafayette Central Catholic, and West Lafayette. The tournament provided an exceptional platform for these athletes to showcase their talents and compete at a high level. Girls were placed into randomly assigned pools, and after 3 potential matchups, entered bracket play to name individual champions at each weight class. The Delphi girls wrestling team, which started with a single wrestler just four years ago, has now grown to 12 members. This growth is mirrored in the top 12 teams from this tournament and across the state, highlighting the expanding interest and participation in girls wrestling. It has been a long time since any sport has gained officially sanctioned status with the IHSAA, and the work these young ladies and their coaches/administrators put into the growth of the sport is nothing short of amazing. The tournament was supported by the boys team who's members served numerous roles to ensure a smooth event and support their female counterparts. This inaugural IHSAA sanctioned event is a monumental step towards greater inclusivity and recognition of female athletes in wrestling. The event set a high standard for future competitions and hopefully inspired the next generation of female wrestlers in Indiana.
